John Steinbeck is the writer of The Pearl and Of mice and mice. He is know for many of the classical books he has written. Two of the novels are, Of Mice and Men and The Pearl. In Of Mice and Men, there were two friends named Lennie and George who were trying to make money to live and have their own ranch. George is the older one who is the care taker of Lennie. Lennie is the younger one who looks up to George. The Pearl , is a book about a family who needs some money so they can get married, have their son go to school, and have a peaceful life. One day, the father Kino ends up finding a pearl which brings them joy, fear, scarceness, and excitement all at different times in their life. In both of the books it showed the failure of achieving the American Dream by showing that they both were trying to make money and they ended up not achieving their goals.
The characters from The Pearl and Of mice and men that resemble each other are Kino and George. These characters resemble each other because they are both the leaders and the older two men in each novel. In Of mice and men, Kino is the father of his family. He is the leader because he is the one who watches over the family at all times and is there to protect them and keep them safe. Kino wants to achieve the American Dream. His dream is to get married to his wife and having his son coyotito be able to go to school. In the book of The Pearl, George is the care taker of Lennie. He is the older and more mature one between them two. George is the one who decides where they are going to live and what choices they are going to make. George also wants to achieve the American Dream, his dream is to eventually live and own their own ranch. He wants to make money to be able to live where he wants a have a peaceful live with Lennie. Both of these characters end up having to make a very difficult decision at the end of the book. In The Pearl, Kinos difficult decision is to throw the Pearl back in the ocean because it has not brought their family great happiness. In Of mice and men, the tough decision that George has to make is to let Lennie die uncomfortably or to kill him in that he wouldn't suffer. These two characters resemble each other in many different ways.
In the two books Of mice and men and The Pearl one set of characters that are similar that stood out are Lennie and Coyotito. First, both of these guys are the younger ones in each of their families. In The Pearl, Coyotito is the baby of Kino and Juan. This family are the ones who find the "amazing" Pearl. In The Pearl, once something great had happened to the family, like finding the Pearl a few days after their finding Coyotito ends up getting bitten by a scorpion. In Of mice and men, Lennie is the younger one who is unable to function completely correctly. In the novel, George and Lennie have always wanted to own their own ranch. One day, they end up going to a ranch, George tells Lennie to keep it quiet about them living on the ranch. While they have been there for a little while, one day George decides to go to town with a group of men and Lennie decides to make a bad choice and follows them. Once Lennie gets to town he ends up telling a man about the ranch that their living on. Sometimes, Lennie is unable to keep things quiet, he can't help it when he makes a mistake. This example, shows how in both stories something exciting happened but then, something not very good happened. Also, Coyotito and Lennie were both of the ones who were involved in both of the promblems. In both of the novels, these two boys are the ones who end up dying in the end.
In John Steinbeck's books Of mice and men and The Pearl he has shown two examples of families failing to achieve the American Dream. In Of mice and men, their American Dream was to live on and own their own ranch with a big farm with cows, bunnies, and other animals. They also wanted to just live a life with money and things that they were able to own themselves. In The Pearl, their American Dream was to earn enough money to get married, own their own gun, and have a lot of money to live in a very nice house and have their son be able to go to school. In both of the novels, they each wanted to achieve the American Dream by earning money and getting to live in a nice area and also to enjoy their life.
In conclusion, The Pearl and Of mice and men have a lot of similarities and similar characters. Also, in each of the books their are examples of how they both failed to achieve the American Dream. In both novels they were both trying to earn money so they could live in a nice area and have all of their dreams come true.
